Our Verdict

If you're on the hunt for a simple, inexpensive running shirt that fits well and keeps you comfortable, the Joe's USA Athletic All-Sport V-Neck could be a good option. While not the highest quality, our testers thought the cut of this shirt was flattering and enjoyed running in it. It's decently breathable but slow to dry, so while it wouldn't be our top choice for hotter temps, it still has a lot to offer for cooler weather. The bulky seams that sit right on top of the shoulder could cause rubbing over longer distances or underneath a pack, but if you're using it for shorter distances where you don't need to wear a running vest, they likely won't cause an issue. This shirt doesn't have any extra features, but at this price, it's a good basic piece.

Our Analysis and Test Results

The simplest and least expensive shirt we wore this season, this tee comes in almost any color you can imagine. If you need high performance, it's not your best bet, but if you just need something to get the job done, this decently comfy shirt will do the trick.

Comfort

Our scoring for the Comfort metric encompasses not just how the shirt feels, but also the overall fit, construction, and quality of the fabric. The 100% polyester fabric of the Athletic All Sport is smooth against the skin, and we think the fit is flattering. We appreciate that the short sleeves are long enough that they sit well against the arm and give a bit of sun protection, and we also like that the body of the shirt isn't too long. The slight v-neck gives an otherwise plain shirt a bit of visual interest, and we think it hits at just the right depth.

This tee is only an average performer in this category, though, because it definitely isn't the highest quality or most well-made. This was apparent in the loose threads along many of the seams and the fact that plain seams are used, as opposed to less bulky, but more expensive flatlock seaming.

The quality of this shirt isn't the highest, with visible loose threads along the seams and hems from the start. We like that the v-neck adds a little interest without being so deep that it exposes too much of our chest to the sun.

Breathability

When it comes to breathability, this Joe's tee is a mid-pack performer. We felt cool and comfortable enough up into the high 70s in full sun, but once it hit the high 80s, we wished for a bit more airflow. If you're not running in super hot weather, however, you'll probably find this shirt's breathability to be good enough.

For late spring weather in Mammoth Lakes, this shirt did the trick. Running in Bishop in the early summer heat, though, had us wishing it was just a bit more breathable.

Drying Speed

Unfortunately, this is the slowest drying shirt we tested this season. This is a bit surprising considering that it isn't particularly heavy, but it goes to show that the two metrics don't always perfectly correlate. Since how quickly your clothes dry can have big consequences in the backcountry or on long missions, we would keep this shirt for shorter, front-country runs.

While not the heaviest shirt we tested, it's still a bit weighty and doesn't dry quickly enough to be effective for technical undertakings.

Features & Versatility

When it comes to features, this shirt is bare bones. There are no reflective decals, no listed UPF rating, and no standout qualities to the fabric. It's versatile in the sense that it could be used for both gym and outdoor workouts, and we'd wear it on day hikes, although it wouldn't be our pick for backpacking. It also loses a few points in this category since we'd be careful choosing to wear it under a pack where the straps might rub against the seams on top of the shoulders.

Value

When it comes to value for your money, we think the Athletic All Sport is a solid option. Especially if you're looking for an entry-level piece of gear, you could get a lot of wear and miles out of this one before figuring out which characteristics are really important to you and deciding to upgrade to a more expensive running shirt.

Conclusion

There are enough aspects of this shirt that we like, such as the fit (and the fact that it comes in tons of colors!), that we'd recommend it to friends who are running in moderate temperatures and aren't looking to spend a ton of money. With decent breathability, albeit a slow drying time, the Joe's USA All Sport performs well enough for your shorter daily miles and gym workouts.
