Our Verdict

The J/Fit Set with Rack is a small but respectable collection featuring three beginner-friendly pairs of hand weights. They are available in several different three-pair combos to allow you to select your ideal range. These neoprene-coated weights are comfortable to use, color-coded for quick recognition, and come with a sturdy rack for storage and organization. Although the handles are slightly larger in diameter than we'd prefer, the rubber coating is grippy and pleasant in hand. We highly recommend this set of dumbbells if you are just starting with weights and want to outfit your home gym or for those looking to add a few more low-weight dumbbell options to their workouts.

Our Analysis and Test Results

Having a variety of dumbbells on hand is ideal for all home workouts. The weight you choose for bicep curls will likely differ from the one you'd want to use for a bench press. It also means people of different fitness levels can choose between numerous options, accessing different weights to meet their unique needs and diverse goals. The J/Fit Set with Rack includes a worthy trio of beginner-style neoprene-coated dumbbells and a stand, with a few different weight combinations to choose from so you can pick the best set for your home gym.

Exercise Versatility

As with most free weights in our lineup, there were minimal issues with versatility when we tested the J/Fit Set. The design of these dumbbells is in line with most standard and beginner-friendly dumbbell styles. We could lift, push, and pull them without any limit to our range of motion.

We did find that smaller J/Fit weights had little clearance to accommodate their use as push-up bars, depending on the size of one's hands. Since the set comes with dumbbells in varied sizes, this isn't a big concern; we simply swapped out the smaller option for a bigger pair and carried on with our workout. They also don't have any moving parts, so they work well for dynamic movements like the dumbbell snatch. However, we don't recommend dropping them. The neoprene coating may protect your hands while in use, but it does not create enough cushion to drop the weight from any significant height safely.

Ease of Use

The J/Fit weights are simple to use. We loved their coating and the included stand. However, we found the diameter of the handles to be on the larger side, which can mean that smaller hands will struggle to maintain a secure grip on heavier sizes.

Each J/Fit dumbbell is a different color based on its size, making it easy to identify your weights at a glance. The poundage is also labeled at the end of both heads, though it is written quite small. The brand logo is printed in a much larger font and shares that space. We wish the sizes of the two features were reversed so that it was easier to read the weight quickly.

Although the weights are not the easiest to read from a distance, you can still use J/Fit's color coding, size differences, and rack placement to choose the correct dumbbells for your workout.

Like most neoprene dumbbells, the shape of the handles in the J/Fit Set is cylindrical rather than including an ergonomic curve, as seen in many standard free weights. Ultimately, this shape is a matter of preference. Either way, the rubber grip is very secure, even for sweaty hands. The handles also have one of the largest diameters of any model we tested, which is especially noticeable on those of larger sizes. The thicker bars didn't impede our use of the bigger weights in the set, but they are something to consider if you have small hands or prefer a thinner bar.

Weight Options

With three pairs of dumbbells, any of the J/Fit Sets you may choose includes a mix of weights to suit your different workouts. The sets are also sold in a few different weight combinations to provide even more diversity in range options for building your home gym. We found this approach beneficial in helping meet the varied needs of individual users.

The set is available in seven different combinations of three dumbbell pairs each. The lightest weight available is two pounds, and the heaviest is 15. While we appreciated the range of options in the lineup overall, we found the pre-established combinations always include dumbbells that are relatively close in size. Since there is no option to mix and match a personalized set, you are limited in variety based on those available. And while you can also purchase individual pairs of dumbbells, there are no additional spots on this rack to add more options.

J/Fit dumbbells can be purchased as a set in up to seven combinations of various weight ranges; the left set totals 10 pounds, and the right is a 23-pound set.

Construction Quality

The construction quality of J/Fit dumbbells aligns with other neoprene-coated models we tested. There are no moving parts, so there is little risk of anything breaking, and we expect them to last for quite some time. Our weight accuracy test measured these dumbbells at just under their listed weight, off by about 2%.

Like most other neoprene and rubber-coated dumbbells, a large seam runs down the handle of each J/Fit weight. Yet, even though they were among the most noticeable seams of any dumbbells in our lineup, they proved more of a minor annoyance than a show-stopping flaw. The design also has no moving parts. So, we suppose you could drop J/Fit weights if necessary during a workout, but we wouldn't recommend it. We'd be fairly confident the dumbbells wouldn't break, although we could not be sure how your floor would handle the impact.

Storage

Thanks to the included rack, the J/Fit Set scored well in our storage metric. Dumbbells can be challenging to keep organized, so starting with an included stand is beneficial. However, not all storage racks are equally as convenient. This one proved to be larger than necessary for only holding three sets of weights.

The included storage stand with this set only holds three pairs of dumbbells yet takes up a surprisingly large footprint. This could be problematic for smaller spaces. We tested other sets with racks that can hold significantly more pairs of weights but have nearly the same-sized footprints. And as with all weight sets, the heavier and larger collections are not meant to be portable once loaded into their stands, although we did manage to slide ours out of the way on our concrete floor, even with all the weights racked upon it.

Should You Buy the J/Fit Set with Rack?

The J/Fit Set with Rack is a great way to pick up a few dumbbell options to update your workouts and increase your weight over time. These durable, beginner-friendly hand weights are easy to identify, use, and even store. The included storage stand comfortably holds all three pairs of dumbbells. Comparatively, they're a little more expensive when assessed at a price per pound. But we think the variety of weight options in a single set makes them worth the cost to meet individual fitness goals.

What Other Dumbbells Should You Consider?

Are you a fan of multi-dumbbell sets but want something with a little heavier weight? The CAP Coated Hex Set with Rack has dumbbells ranging from five to 25 pounds and is one of the best price-per-pound options out of our entire dumbbell lineup. These CAP dumbbells are easy to use and bomb-proof; we dropped them repeatedly on our sturdy gym floor with no issues. For even more variety in weight, the Core Home Fitness Adjustable Set comes with a pair of fully adjustable dumbbells that can increase up to 50 pounds per weight in five-pound increments. Each Core weight is controlled by rotating its handle while racked, and the pair is straightforward to use and store. Alternatively, if you're only looking for a single pair of beginner-friendly dumbbells, the Amazon Basics Neoprene, the CAP Barbell Neoprene Coated Hex, or the SPRI Deluxe Vinyl-Coated are good options. Each of these dumbbell sets is available in a variety of color-coded options ranging from 1 - 20 pounds and will help take your workout to the next level.
