ToPeak Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ Review

Typically, when you think multi-tool, you think of a piece of metal origami. ToPeak changed things up a bit with the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+, a very unique tool with a lot to offer. There are some cycling-specific ratchet tools on the market, but the field is quite narrow compared to typical folding multi-tools. There are some compromises to the benefits of the NTX+, but overall, there is a lot to like about this tool.

Features

The Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ contains a total of 19 functions, including an adjustable 2-6 Nm torque TorqBit, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 mm Allen bits, T10, T15, T25 Torx bits, #2 Phillips screwdriver, Chromoly chain tool with a chain breaker, ratchet, and a carry case with a "patch pocket" for additional storage. The handle of the chain tool separates from the head and can be used as a magnetic extension, or it can attach to the ratchet handle for added leverage. The carrying case has numbered individual pockets to organize the bits, a sleeve for the Torqbit and chain tool, and snap-in clips to secure the ratchets.

ToPeak offers a different ratchet system without a chain tool, but since a broken chain is a ride-ending problem, the "+" version includes this necessary tool. Despite the impressive tool collection, there are still a few commonly used tools that are missing from this kit, including box wrenches, spoke wrenches, a flathead screwdriver, and a tubeless repair tool. They aren't necessarily standard tools we need in a trailside kit, but they are convenient to have on hand.

Ergonomics

The Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ is easily one of the most ergonomic tools we have tested and made it hard to go back to standard, foldable multi-tools. It operates like a regular ratchet, just in miniature form, with nimble movements and quick direction changes. The ratchet has a smooth finish with no sharp edges on the handle to dig into your palm. The fine-tooth ratchet is simple to operate, and not only does it offer more leverage than comparable tools, but you can create additional leverage by placing the extension or Torqbit into the end of the handle. The ratchet head has a thumbwheel on the backside, which allows you to quickly remove or install a bolt before the final tightening motions. The fine teeth on the ratchet mechanism mean very small movements of the handle engage the wrench, and the extension makes it easy to access hard-to-reach places, like caliper bolts or water bottle cages.

Ergonomic testing looked at regularly performed tasks, like tightening headset screws, and other tasks that require higher torque, like pedal removal and installation. Many times, trying to remove a pedal with a fold-out multi-tool means your palm will take some punishment. But the additional leverage NTX+ made swapping out pedals easy. Even if we had a hard time getting a pedal to budge, adding the handle extension solved the problem. In fact, the NTX+ is such a nice tool that we found ourselves consistently reaching for it during regular bike maintenance. We could easily see it becoming a staple in many home workshops.

Portability

While the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ shines in the ergonomics category, it is not the smallest or most compact tool to carry when out riding. The ratchet, bits, chain tool, and torque wrench are all housed individually in a foldable nylon pouch with a Velcro closure. When the pouch is completely closed, it measures approximately 5.1 x 2.6 x 1.3 inches and weighs 240 grams. The tool package isn't overly heavy, but it certainly is one of the heaviest kits of all the multi-tools we tested. The NTX+ has a carry loop attached to the back if you want to carry it on your belt or use your own method to attach it to a frame.

The NTX+ could be carried in a side pocket of your riding shorts or pants, but the weight and size of the kit will likely be annoying as you bounce around on the trail. If you ride with a hydration pack, waist bag, or saddlebag, the NTX+ is a fantastic option that doesn't take up too much real estate. The case could be attached to the outside of a pack, but we would worry about parts falling out, so we chose to keep it secured in a pocket.

Ease of Use

The nylon carrying case has individually labeled storage sleeves for each of the bits, which are labeled for easy identification. Having to remove the ratchet from its secure pocket and choose which bit you want to use does sacrifice some time and convenience compared to traditional multi-tools. But the design of the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ is intuitive and maximizes efficiency during repairs. The top of the ratchet has a thumb wheel, which makes switching out bits a speedy endeavor. The hex bits snap firmly into place into the ratchet head, and a small lever controls the direction of the ratchet, just like a normal, full-sized wrench.

The Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+ loses some convenience points compared to other multi-tools because of the multiple pieces involved. It takes time to select the correct bit, and if you are working on a part that has multiple-size bolts, you will have to keep track of all the loose bits. We're a bit concerned about losing bits during a trailside repair because finding a lost bit in the dirt can be a challenge. Each of these issues may not take a lot of time in themselves, but time can quickly add up, which can make a difference if you are riding in a race or if others are simply waiting on you to continue the ride.

Construction Quality

We really tried our best to expose any flaws or construction issues with the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+, but we did not have any problems during testing. The NTX+ uses chrome vanadium steel for the main tools and Chromoly for the chain tool. The ratchet handle machining is uniform and smooth, and the bits have a very tight tolerance inside the ratchet and handle base. Even with repeated use on the trail and in the garage, the NTX+ showed zero signs of wear from our testing. The nylon case held up well to normal abuse – like being knocked around in a bag and being tossed on the ground – and the Velcro closure is holding strong.

When we first got our hands on this tool, we were concerned about the very small ratchet mechanism and lever. But the ratcheting mechanism has fine teeth with strong engagement, and when subjected to high torque operations, they do not slip or break. We can't promise that the NTX+ will last forever, but we don't expect you to have any issues even after years of regular use.

Should You Buy the ToPeak Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+

With the Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX+, ToPeak designed a very well-made multi-tool that is comfortable to use and mechanically sound. This tool kit is a great alternative to the standard fold-out tools on the market and may fill a niche as a versatile mini-ratchet set. It is comfortable and convenient for repairs on the trail and in the garage, and we frequently found ourselves reaching for the NTX+ for regular maintenance. It won't be winning any awards for the most modest price tag, but riders who are willing to spend a bit of money to get an ergonomic tool that can easily access hard-to-reach places will find a lot of value in the NTX+ kit.
